Recently tried to install the Twonky Media server onto a Dlink Nas 320 ShareCenter. After a couple of hours trying to get the thing installed and set-up we found that all we were getting when trying access via its Web page interface was error 404 page cannot be displayed. After several more hours messing around and we finally figured out that the answer lied in permissions to the actual folder that Twonky was to be installed into.

It seems that if you run the code that is displayed on the NAS-Tweaks.net site as below.. it should go off and download the zip file required and then install twonky for you…

mkdir -p /ffp/opt/twonky/data/
cd /ffp/opt/twonky
wget http://www.twonkyforum.com/downloads/7.0.11-Special/twonky-kurobox-pro-special-7.0.11.zip
unzip twonky-*.zip
rm twonky-*.zip
chmod +x twonkyserver twonkystarter twonkyproxy twonkywebdav plugins/* cgi-bin/*
wget http://wolf-u.li/u/449 -O /ffp/start/twonky.sh
wget http://wolf-u.li/u/448 -O /ffp/opt/twonky/twonkyserver-default.ini
[[ $(ls -1 /mnt|grep -c HD_a2) -eq 0 ]] && sed -i -e 's!/HD_a2!/HD/HD_a2!g' -e 's!/HD_b2!/HD/HD_b2!g' /ffp/opt/twonky/twonkyserver-default.ini

We found the answer is to manually download the Kuro Box Pro zip file from here then place it inside the correct folder on your nas(/ffp/opt/twonky/data/) To do this you may need to upload it using the “Web file Server” application on the ShareCenter as manually copying and pasting into the folder using windows explorer will give a permission error as well. Next run the command as above again via putty. It will work fine now you will be able to access web page interface for twonky using http://your nas ip address:9000

Good luck and let me know how you get on

If you own one of these laptops you’ll know how annoying it is to keep having to turn the wireless on every time you switch it on. Here’s a way to automatically enable it

Step 1 – Create a text file and copy and paste the following text into it…

Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject(“WScript.Shell”)
Set oExec = WshShell.Exec(“C:\Program Files\Launch Manager\WisWBSet.exe”)
do while WshShell.AppActivate(“Wireless Status Option”)=False
WScript.Sleep 100
loop
WScript.Sleep 100
WshShell.sendkeys(“{TAB}{TAB}{LEFT}~”)

Step 2 – Save the file as startwireless.vbs type file. Instructions how to do this if your not sure..

Open Windows Explorer, you can do this by opening up any folder or you can just click Start > User Name.

Click “Organize”, scroll down and click “Folder and search options”.

Click the “View” tab. Scroll down until you see “Hide extensions for known file types”, un-check this line here by clicking on the check box.

Click “OK” and now your file extensions will now longer be hidden.

Step 3 – copy the file into the startup folder (I usually just click start button, find the start up folder as below and then right click and open.

Once the file is in the startup folder and providing you have saved it as a .vbs file the wireless function will be enabled every time you start windows – enjoy!

Ok, so after spending lots of time trying to configure the ShareCenter NAS-320 for remote access via ftp I decided to write a guide to help others – lets face it the instructions that come with it are pretty useless.
There’s 5 main steps to getting this thing working and they are..

Create a No-IP account

Download & Install No-IP client

Enable FTP access on ShareCenter

Ensure router has ftp port forwarded to ShareCenter

Set ShareCenter to have static IP address

Step 1 – Create a No-IP account

Create a free account with No-IP at http://www.no-ip.com/

Reason for this is so that you don’t have to keep remembering an IP address all the time, you can create a unique name (hostname) that you use to connect to your computer or NAS in this case. The hostname in this example is “techsonsite.myftp.biz”

Your Internet Service Provider assigns a unique IP address to your router each time it is switched on, so you can see that it can be become a nightmare trying to remember it each time it gets changed.

Once you’ve created an account goto “Your-IP” at the top of the page and then choose the “Add a Host” button as shown below in red..

Next type a hostname that you will remember and then use the dropdown to choose a domain name, choose any one you like.. (leave the rest of the options as the default)

Next click “create host” at the bottom on this same page and that’s it your done creating your hostname.

Step 2 – Download & Install No-IP client

Next step is to download the No-IP client which you’ll need to install on your computer and this will keep checking to make sure that the No-IP website has your most up to date IP address from your ISP/router. Download the client and install as shown in red below..

Once downloaded and installed, open the program “No-IP DUC” and enter your login details that you registered.

Next place a tick next to the hostname you created as below in red and click “Save”..

If successful it should look something like below..

Now go to file / preferences and place a tick in the option that says “Run on Startup” this will ensure the program starts everytime the computer is switched on.

Step 3 – Enable FTP access on ShareCenter

Open ShareCenter admin screen by typing your ShareCenter’s IP address into your web browser, next click the “Management” tab and then choose “Account Management” as below in red..

Next choose “Network Shares” as below and notice that FTP is not currently active for Volume_1

Select the share name that you wish to allow ftp access for and click the “Modify” button as below..

Work through the wizard that appears until you reach the screen below and ensure you place a tick in the “ftp” tick box..

Click next twice and then click finish.

Ftp is now active for volume_1 as shown below..

Step 4 – Set the ShareCenter to a static IP address

On the “Management” tab choose “Network Management”

Under LAN settings, change from DHCP to “Static IP” then enter your ShareCentre’s IP address (this is the same IP address as you used to access these admin/set-up pages) You could assign another IP address if required as long as nothing else in your network is using it.

If you’re not sure what the other settings should be then go to Start/Run and type “cmd” and then “enter” you should get cmd window as below..

In this cmd window type ipconfig /all and look under local Ethernet adapter local area connection (or wireless if you’re using wireless connection) Subnet, gateway & dns settings are all listed.

Once you’ve entered the settings click save and your done.

Step 5 – Ensure router has it’s ftp port forwarded to your ShareCenter

Type your routers IP address into your browser and enter your login information..

Once you’ve accessed your router find the screen that allows port forwarding, location varies on the different models of router, below is Linksys router where port forwarding is found under Applications & Gaming..

Enter the IP address of your ShareCenter as set in the previous step and click enable and then save.

Restart the router and you should be ready to now access your ShareCenter remotely via FTP. You can access it via web browser using the hostname you created on No-IP, ie “techsonsite.myftp.biz” or use something like filezilla a free ftp program. There are also apps for mobile devices available – “ftp client pro” for Iphone is good). Note: When setting up ftp client you’ll need to enter not only the hostname but username and password for the file share you created – both are case sensitive!

A quick step by step guide for sorting out an issue which lots of people seem to have with the Netgear ReadyNAs drives – the main problem being that you turn the ReadyNAs drive on all ready to start sharing files amongst all your networked devices only to find that after installing the RAIDar software that the drives report “Corrupt Root“(pic below) and the set up button is greyed out / inactive. The main problem seems to be the way drives are formatted, believe the ReadyNAS uses it’s own file system and when a drive is inserted, it wants to try and create this file structure on the disks but is unable to if they are already formatted under windows say. This guide is for the ReadyNAS Duo v2(purchased without disks) so not sure wether it’s the same for the previous versions but may help someone….

Step 1 – Ensure any hard drives you want to use are on the compatibility list from Netgear found here

Step 2 – If the drive has been used previously in a windows enviroment then you’ll need to clear any partitions / data from them. Do this by connecting up to a Windows PC and then right click on “My Computer” and select “Manage” then goto “Disk Management” find the correct drive(Careful here!) and right click and “delete volume” That’s it! this is the bit people are not doing and believe is causing the “Corrupt Root” error.

Step 3 – Place hard drive into ReadyNas slot and start it up (Do not put drive into the nas powered up). Open the Raidar application and it will after a few minutes say “Testing Disks” then shortly after that the “Setup” button will become active ready to set your NAS drive

Hopefully this will prevent some people from returning as faulty or hours of searching the net for the answer.

Good luck all and leave a comment if it helped you out, please also link back to this guide to help others, many thanks !
